The Fotona Nd:YAG laser has the depth of penetration necessary to reach hair follicles without causing collateral damage to the skin. Laser hair removal is accomplished by delivering laser energy into the skin where hair growth is present. Laser energy is attracted to hemoglobin that nourishes the hair follicle, and the melanin in hair within the follicle. White or gray hair does not pull in the laser energy and generally will not be affected by treatment. The hair follicles that are in an anagen, or growing, phase will absorb the energy, heat will be created, and the follicle will die. A follicle in a resting, or telogen, phase will not absorb the energy, and therefore will not be affected by the treatment. Treatments are timed to occur during these growth cycles. The number of treatments necessary depends on the client’s expectations; but typically laser hair removal requires a series of 6-8 treatments.
